Improve Your Dental Care Routine — Protecting Your Whole Body

Oral health is not just about teeth and gums — it is connected to your entire body's health. Research links periodontal disease to cardiovascular health, blood sugar, and brain health. A complete dental care routine taking 5 minutes morning and evening is a robust habit to build. Start today.

Why oral health matters

Your mouth is home to over 700 species of bacteria — the so-called oral microbiome. Most are harmless or even beneficial. But when the balance is disrupted — through poor oral hygiene, sugar, or smoking — harmful bacteria take over. The result can be inflammation in the gums, which is connected to the rest of the body. The mouth is the body's gateway: dental care is not just about avoiding cavities — it is about supporting your whole body by keeping chronic inflammation low.

What the research says

❤️ Heart health

A study by Tonetti et al. (2017) published in the European Heart Journal showed that people with periodontal disease have a 20 to 30% higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Bacteria from gum pockets enter the bloodstream and are linked to inflammation in blood vessels — the same process associated with atherosclerosis.

🩸 Blood sugar: a two-way connection

Diabetes and periodontal disease are associated with each other. High blood sugar weakens the immune response in the gums, while periodontal disease is linked to increased insulin resistance. Studies show that treating gum disease improves HbA1c by an average of 0.4% — a clinically meaningful improvement comparable to adding a diabetes medication.

🧠 Brain health: bacteria in the brain

A study published in Science Advances (2019) found the bacterium P. gingivalis — common in periodontal disease — in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. The bacterium produces toxic enzymes (gingipains) that can damage nerve cells. Possible mechanism: oral bacteria spread through the blood or along nerves.

Step by Step: Build the Habit in 4 Weeks

A complete dental care routine takes 5 minutes. It is about building habits step by step — start simple and add one element per week.

1
Week 1: 2-minute timer when brushing

Most people brush for only 45 seconds — too short to properly remove plaque. Set a timer for 2 minutes every time you brush, morning and evening. It feels long at first, but it is what your enamel needs. Divide into 30 seconds per quadrant (upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left).

2
Week 2: Add daily interdental cleaning

The toothbrush only reaches 60% of tooth surfaces. The remaining 40% — the spaces between teeth — require separate tools. Start with interdental brushes in the right size. Do it in the evening before brushing. Start with just the front teeth if the whole mouth feels overwhelming.

3
Week 3: Optimize your technique

Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line — not straight against the tooth. Use the Bass method: short vibrating strokes along the gum line, not long scrubbing motions. It is at the gum line where plaque accumulates and causes inflammation. Pay extra attention to the inside of the front teeth — the most commonly missed surface.

4
Week 4: Book a dentist + fluoride rinse

Book a dental appointment if it has been more than 12 months. Also add a fluoride rinse in the evening (after brushing, spit it out but do not rinse with water). Fluoride strengthens enamel and counteracts acid attacks during the night when saliva production decreases. Now you have a complete routine.

The Complete Oral Care Routine

☀️ Morning routine (3 min)

Brush for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste (1450 ppm fluoride for adults) using a 45-degree angle and the Bass method. Spit out excess foam — but do NOT rinse your mouth with water, let the fluoride work. Wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking — especially acidic items (juice, coffee). Enamel is soft right after brushing.

🌙 Evening routine (5 min) — the most important!

Interdental cleaning first: interdental brushes or floss in all spaces — this loosens plaque that the toothbrush then removes. Then brush for 2 minutes with the same technique as in the morning. Finish with a fluoride rinse (0.2% NaF) for 30 seconds — spit it out, do not rinse with water. It builds a protective layer overnight.

🔧 Interdental tools — choose the right one

Interdental brushes suit most people — choose a size where the brush fills the space with light resistance, use without toothpaste. Floss suits very tight spaces where a brush does not fit (waxed versions glide easier). A water flosser (Waterpik) is a good supplement with braces or implants, but does not replace mechanical cleaning.

What does the data show about dental care and health?

Here we will show a group comparison between Cipoli users with good dental care habits and those with poor oral hygiene.

  • Comparison of dental care habits and cardiovascular markers
  • Relationships between oral hygiene, inflammation, and general health
  • Correlations between sugar intake, smoking, and dental health
