The claim
The claim is simple and nearly sacred in modern health circles: to stay healthy, you need to walk 10,000 steps every day. The number is preprogrammed into most step counters and smartwatches, and reaching it often earns you a little reward on the screen.
But its origin is more marketing than science. The number 10,000 is often traced back to a Japanese pedometer from the 1960s called manpo-kei, which literally means "the 10,000-step meter." The name was chosen partly because the Japanese character for 10,000 resembles a walking figure. So it was never a scientifically established threshold, but rather a catchy and easily communicated goal.
In its strongest form, the claim still rests on something reasonable: more movement is generally better than little, and a concrete daily goal can motivate people to move more. The question is whether 10,000 specifically is magic, or whether the number is arbitrary.
What does the research say?
Newer research has tested the relationship between the number of daily steps and health outcomes, and the picture is more nuanced than "10,000 or nothing."
An often-cited study by Lee, I-M. et al. (2019) followed older women and found that the risk of early death dropped clearly at around 4,400 steps per day compared to the least active. The benefits continued to increase up to about 7,500 steps, after which the curve leveled off. More steps were not harmful, but the major health gain was achieved well before 10,000.
A large meta-analysis by Paluch, A.E. et al. (2022), published in The Lancet Public Health, compiled data from tens of thousands of participants across various ages. Researchers found that increased step counts were consistently linked to lower mortality, but that the optimal level varied with age. For adults over 60, the benefit leveled off around 6,000–8,000 steps, while younger adults seemed to benefit up to 8,000–10,000.
So the studies point in the same direction: the intensity and regularity of movement matter, and even modest increases from a sedentary starting point are associated with significant health gains. It's also worth noting that steps only measure one form of activity. Cycling, swimming, and strength training don't show up on a step counter, but they contribute to health.
Moving more is clearly linked to better health, but the specific number 10,000 is arbitrary and comes from marketing. Research suggests that a large part of the benefit is achieved already at 6,000–8,000 steps for many adults.
How to best use the step goal
Rejecting step counting altogether would be the wrong conclusion. A concrete daily goal can be a valuable tool, as long as you don't interpret 10,000 as a line between healthy and unhealthy.
- Start from your own baseline. If you currently walk 3,000 steps, the move to 6,000 is more meaningful than chasing 10,000. Research suggests the largest relative gains come from leaving the most sedentary range.
- See steps as one of several forms of movement. A step counter doesn't capture cycling, strength training, or gardening. Don't let the number become the whole truth about your activity.
- Prioritize regularity over perfection. Moving a little every day is often more strongly linked to health in studies than occasional intense sessions followed by inactivity.
- Add intensity where it fits. Doing some of your steps at a brisker pace can provide extra cardiovascular benefit compared to slow walking alone.

For someone who is already active, variation in intensity and movement type may be more relevant than additional steps.
Step count is a simple proxy, but it says nothing about strength, cardiovascular fitness, or recovery. Cipoli therefore views steps as one piece of the puzzle among several, not as the answer key.
